I opened Momma Bears Quilts here on Etsy in 2015. I live in rural Ontario, Canada. I am married with four grown children. We are blessed with a health, happiness, space, grandies and much, much more! Home is our favorite place to be.

I am a Handiquilter Avante Longarm Quilting machine. I am getting up in years but with care and patience have many more stitches in me. I love to help make a house into a home with beautiful quilts!

Frequently asked questions

Wholesale availability

I do not create for wholesale. My items are often unique and made individually.

Care instructions

Laundering has long been a topic of discussion for quilt enthusiasts. What is the correct way?? Generally, it is recommended to use a gentle cycle, mild soap and tumble drying on low heat. It is the tumble drying that achieves the soft crinkly look that we associate with handmade quilts. If you prefer a flatter look, lay flat to air dry rather than using the dryer.
** Note: I rarely prewash my fabrics. Expect a small amount of shrinkage on the first laundering.
Personally, I have often washed my own quilts as above or even in with a regular wash load. I like the old-fashioned crinkly look that comes with regular laundry practices, and do not like the intimidation of “correct procedure”. Common sense works! 😊

Custom and personalised orders

I am happy to do custom work and create a unique quilt just for you! It is important to be aware that I am not a fabric shop and while my stash is substantial, it is limited.
Custom orders are generally more expensive than listed stock. This is due, in part, to the involved email communication that is required between us to confirm and verify that I understand your preferences. Depending on the project, it can be an involved process, especially if you have specific requirements.
Again, depending on the project, I may require a downpayment and/or periodic deposits.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you are interested something. Sometimes I can accommodate with a specific color scheme for minimal price difference from listed stock.

Methods and Materials

I always use quality fabrics and thread. Quilt shop cotton is what I most often use.

In addition, I am conscientious about making sure I use an ample seam allowance, never leaving fabrics holding together by a few threads. This ensures a quality, handmade item, that will withstand normal care and use for many years.

The inner batting layer is usually Pellon or Hobbs 80/20. Occasionally I use a bamboo batting.

Binding is always double thickness with neat, mitered corners, and attached by machine for added durability.

What is Freemotion Quilting?

When it comes to the actual quilting, my area of expertise is freemotion quilting.

Freemotion refers to hand guided machine stitching rather than being controlled by a computer. This technique adds genuine artistry to your quilt. The unique execution of repetitive designs will not have the exact precision of a computer, relying instead on the talent, artistry and vision of the person guiding the machine.

Gift wrapping and packaging

If you have chosen gift wrapping, I will use a generic wrap that I have on hand, with a computer printed custom message from you, if applicable. I am happy to create a simple handwritten message if preferred (just message me at time of purchase).

I package all my items responsibly, first with a care for your purchase and then with a desire to reuse and recycle any shipping material I have around.
