Reproduction of an Early Iron Age (ca. 200-400 C.E.) Couronian crossbow fibula discovered in Mazkatuži and Rucava, Latvia as well as Tursel, Estonia. 9 x 7cm (3½ x 2¾”). Original in bronze and iron. A fibula is essentially a fancy safety pin and can be used as a clasp for a shirt, cloak, or coat. This type of fibula was named for its resemblance to a crossbow in the eyes of a 19th, 20th or 21st century archaeologist only, because the crossbow weapon was probably not in use in Latvia until several hundred years after the popularity of such fibulas. Appropriate with Latvian or Estonian folk costume and for Dark Ages re-enactors as a shirt, cloak or coat clasp. Also available in bronze. The core inside the spring is iron.
