Writing, cooking, sewing and embroidering are some of my passions. On the other hand, collecting little pieces of every single possible sewing notion, small things like buttons, beads, hand made stuff, ribbons, lace, all of those useless somethings that one day you can glue to a stud and make it an earring or that gorgeous lace you used to embellish a pillocase. That´s the way my personal journey has turned out to be now days.
I lived in Boynton Beach, FL from 2000 to 2006, and then went back to my homeland, Venezuela. Back on late 2013, I decided to leave again my country, as political and social crisis was just about to burst there, getting worst by the day. By then, for some time I have been saving every food wrapping I came about, not knowing the exact reason to be doing this, but feeling that food and daily life supplies were about to become iconic on our Venezuelan life.
Within the next couple of years, almost ALL of this wrappings, and the food they contained, vanished, disappeared from markets and supermarkets shelves, from people´s tables and homes. Venezuela has been living since then the most serious shortage of almost everything manufactured and sold before in that country, such as food, medicines, clothes, etc. And, if you can find any of these items right now in Venezuela, most likely you would not be able to pay for it due to the galloping inflation and unaffordable prices.
I moved to Hollywood, Florida in November 2013, and immediatly started embroidering on two different types of textile works: Various Virgin Mary Advocations or images, and Venezuelan food and other products wrappings. Very different kinds of textile works, but both have given me spiritual relief from the unavoidable homesick feelings, and also the opportunity to turn calamity into an art form.
At the same time, my heart urgently called for some lighter work, so I have been turning cute buttons from my collection, into some even cutest earrings! Last February 2017 I jumped out from my Northamerican life in Florida, and made a quick and wonderful trip back to Venezuela for two fantastic weeks, to Margarita Island where I used to live when I had left last. There I found young artisans working with whatever they could find on hand, and that is how I came along with these beautiful little salt dough figurines, now also turned into stud earrings at my studio in Hollywood, FL.
The Fabrics Plaza Etsy shop intends to showcases of all these different works.
