Creating special everyday things from clay

I have been studying and practising pottery for many years, and have always loved making everyday items like mugs, bowls and plates. I studied a Diploma of Ceramics after an Arts degree, and then became a teacher. We live on a small farm in outback New South Wales where I am inspired by the red earth, vast blue skies, brown river, the olive eucalypts and rich green citrus trees around me.

Our farm is called "Avalon" and I have always loved the name as it reminded me of the legends of King Arthur and his "Isle of Avalon" shrouded in mist.
So the studio became "Avalon Pottery". The fish logo came about because the farm has frontage onto a natural inland lake where we spend a lot of time fishing, boating, swimming and exploring.

There is a huge amount of materials required for a functioning pottery - I have to house my electric wheel, kiln, drying area, jars and buckets of raw ingredients to make glazes and underglaze colours, piles of wooden boards to throw and dry pots on, countless brushes, knives, needle tools, turning tools to finish and decorate the pots, then shelves and crates in which to store the finished pieces until they are sold. Then there is the packaging and shipping materials, postage boxes and record keeping books and journals... always something to do, but it is so rewarding to take a lump of clay and transform it into a beautiful unique piece that somebody somewhere will treasure!
