Logwood Shavings - come from the heartwood of the Bloodwood Tree (Haematoxylum campechianum) which is found in Mexico, Central America, Colunbia, Venezuela and the Guyanas. Belize grew out of 17th century logging camps. Today Logwood dye is an important source of haematoxylin, used in histology for staining slides.

How much dye to purchase:
All natural dyeing is based on wog or wof - weight of goods or weight of fabric
Here is the formula for the Logwood Shavings to dye 1 pound of fabric.
For example 1 pound of fabric = 16 ounces or 453.59237 grams
Round up to 500 grams (17.6 ounces)
multiply the % of logwood shavings x the wog/wof
Logwood shavings:
25% by weight of fiber for dark purple (with Alum mordant), dark blue-purple (with Copper mordant), dark grey-charcoal (with Iron mordant)
10-15% by weight of fiber for light purples, medium grays
25% Logwood Shavings x 500 grams of fabric = 125 grams or 4.40 ounces of Logwood Shavings
10% Logwood Shavings x 500 grams of fabric = 50 grams or 1.75 ounces of Logwood Shaving
