I currently work full time but I really love crafting! Knitting, crochet, sewing, quilting, macrame, etc. Recently was introduced to our local FabLab (that is closed due to Covid) and dabbled a bit in stickers, vinyl and laser engraving.

Frequently asked questions

What size are your masks?

Most masks are medium and will fit adults and older teens.

If you have a smaller or larger face, please let me know and I’ll adjust the elastic or send a shortener or extender if possible.

Why don’t you offer pleated masks or other fabrics?

I spent a lot of time researching the best fit, materials and reading countless articles about efficacy.

Double layer quilt cotton was one of the best fabric combos. I did use flannel for one of the layers early on but while effective, made it much hotter and harder to breath. Chiffon is a good filter but harder to work with and frankly more expensive.

Knit, rayon, polyester and spandex are not effective and I wouldn’t feel comfortable making, donating or selling those as face covering.

I won’t do embroidery either because it can reduce the efficacy. I do two top stitches because I want the mask to stand up to multiple washings.

Care instructions

Masks can be machine washed and dried. If you want your mask to last longer, you may want to hand wash and line dry.

As long as you use soap or a diluted bleach mixture and allow the mask to dry thoroughly, you are good to go.

You can iron the mask but avoid heat on the straps to avoid melting the elastic.

PLEASE WASH BEFORE WEARING!!

Please wash between uses.

Why don’t you make a filter pocket?

Short answer: Pockets would require some time to do R&D to make sure I can produce these economically and efficiently. Many of my masks are made in advance and I wouldn’t feel comfortable adding another layer without testing for fit.

Long answer: Since I started making masks in April, I tried many variations and styles. I landed on this style and picked the softest ear elastics I could find. Efficacy, comfort and durability are my top concerns.

Since I have made over 3,000 masks, muscle memory and batch sewing has allowed me to continue to make these at the same level of output. Adding a third layer or augmenting the existing liner to allow for a filter insert would take time to test and I just haven’t had the time.

Why don’t you do nose pockets or sew the nose wires in to the mask?

Short answer: It offers the wearer options and the less sewing on the mask, the more effective & safer the mask is.

Long answer: I have donated ~500 masks to my local hospital. They had strict requirements for what you could donate and my masks adhere to those guidelines. Specially regarding sewn in nose wires.

Sewing the metal in to the mask can be problematic if the metal bends or breaks. Additionally, not everyone needs a wire on their mask.

The nose strips are economical and can be used several times. You can extend the life of the strip by using double sided or scotch tape.

Lastly, nose pockets, like filter pockets add more holes (from the needle) and the goal is to minimize holes, albeit small.

How should I care for the napkins?

Please wash the napkins before use. Follow your machine recommendations but most machines and detergent work fine on cold. I would avoid using hot setting because these napkins are 100% Cotton and may shrink on hot.

Wash with towels or regulars and pretreat for tough stains.

You shouldn’t need to iron if you take them out of the dryer promptly. Light iron if you prefer.

How do I care for the bowl cozies?

Wash with towels or regulars. Do not use fabric softener and if you get spills or stains, wash immediately.

You can air dry or use a machine dryer. There might be slight shrinking if you machine dry on hot. Air drying is the best way to preserve the form of the cozy.
