The Green Man marks my first foray into depictions of the Sacred Masculine. He is a legendary being primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring. The Green Man is most commonly depicted in a representation of a face which is made of, or completely surrounded by, leaves. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history.
There are legends of him in which, like Osiris, he is dismembered and reborn; and prophecies connecting him with the end of time. His is the voice of inspiration to the aspirant and committed artist. He can come as a white light or the gleam on a blade of grass, but more often as an inner mood. The sign of his presence is the ability to work or experience with tireless enthusiasm beyond one’s normal capacities. In this there may be a link across cultures, because one reason for the enthusiasm of the medieval sculptors for the Green Man may be that he was the source of every inspiration.
I was about four when I became infatuated with Mythology and through that love, discovered the Green Man, who was not an atypical God, but a being present on the earth which to me was obviously and quite simply the emanation of God overseeing the tasks of Nature. His presence in wild places was, and is still, palpable.
At Christmas, he came to life in the form of Father Christmas - a theory which bore itself out through research and study for the parallels are too many to be coincidence. The connection between Santa Claus = Odin = The Green Man is only one of hundreds. The very similar wreaths and look between Father Christmas and the Green Man, both being the giver of gifts.
.Where Mother Earth is the vessel which sustains all life and through which all life grows, the Green Man is the overseer, tending to the details of that growth. He is the spiritual warrior charged with defending Mother Earth and caring for Her creature. He embodies the entirety of Her energy, and it is as this powerful warrior soul that I have depicted him.
To me, he is the perfect embodiment of God on this Earth, and of the Sacred Masculine. And a perfect beginning to this artistic journey.
