- 1 PACKET of 50 GRAMS of ALUM in powder form (also known as Potassium Aluminum Sulfate)
&/OR
- 1 PACKET of 25 grams of IRON in powder form (also known as Ferrous Sulfate).

ABOUT ALUM + IRON
------------------------------
ALUM and IRON are used to mordant fibers and fabrics before applying Natural Dye. Mordant gives Natural Dyes a surface to grip permanently.
Without mordant, most Natural Dyes will either immediately rinse out or quickly fade, or both.

ALUM Mordant helps Natural Dyes achieve their brightest, strongest potentials when dyed over. It is a safe metallic salt and perfect for home use.
It's good for use on Protein and Cellulose fibers/fabrics.

IRON is used to mordant fibers and fabrics either before applying Natural Dye or as a Post-Mordant Color Shifter.
As a Pre-Mordant, IRON gives Natural Dyes a surface to grip permanently while shifting colors to a dark, moody palette.
As a Post-Mordant, IRON allows a dyer to shift many dyes to a different spectrum of color.

IRON Mordant helps Natural Dyes achieve deep, dark, moody hues. It is a safe metallic salt and perfect for home use.
It's good for use on Protein and Cellulose fibers/fabrics.
** Be sure to not overdue IRON on silks and protein fibers.

DETERMINING QUANTITY / DIRECTIONS:

ALUM:
----------
(1) Weigh dry fiber/fabric to dye.
(2) Divide total weight of dry fiber/fabric by 15-20%.
(3) Measure that quantity of ALUM to mordant with.
(4) Boil a pot* of water that will fit fiber/fabric to mordant.
(5) Gently pour ALUM into hot water and stir till dissolved.
(6) Wet all fiber/fabric before adding to the mordant.
(7) Add wet fiber/fabric to the mordant.
(8) Cook on medium to high heat (dependent on fiber type -- e.g. lower heat for silks, wools; higher heat for cellulose) for 1 hour.

IRON:
----------
(1) Weigh dry fiber/fabric to dye.
(2) Divide total weight of dry fiber/fabric by 2-4%.
(3) Measure that quantity of IRON to mordant with.
(4) There are a variety of ways to use IRON.

All hand woven textiles & hand dyed goods have been hand washed and pressed before shipping.

In order to best care for your hand dyed piece, be sure to always wash separately. Color bleed can continue to occur long after the dye process is complete, though generally minimal.

Dyes are handwash-safe and fade-resistant, though long durations in direct sunlight or washing with harsh cleansers will fade most dyes.

An occasional gentle hand washing with a delicate soap and cold water is perfect. Lay flat to dry. Iron as needed and preferred.

In order to best care for your hand woven piece, an occasional gentle hand washing with a delicate soap and cold water is best. Instructions follow:

1. Gently hand wash in cold water using a delicate soap, or if wool, use wool-safe soap.
2. Gently squeeze out excess water.
3. Lay flat and roll up in a large towel.
4. Lay flat to dry.
5. When nearly dry, optionally press with low-medium heat for a crisper look.

In order to best care for your hand woven wall hanging and/or tapestry, a gentle, yearly shake-down outdoors or near a window, followed by hanging in fresh air for a few hours is perfect.

I haven't had the time to do the dye project I'm planning on, but I've done some scrap fabric tests using the alum and instruction book. I'm uploading a photo of some scrap fabric I soaked in cheap red wine (what I had on hand). The left fabric just soaked up some wine; the right fabric was scoured according to the instruction book and had alum as a mordant. I was surprised at how stark the difference is. TLDR the product is great. Jeanine was also very helpful with all of the questions I sent. Thank you!

I used alum as a mordant pre-dyeing and iron as a post-dyeing color shifter on just a few items. My only regret is I did not realize how quickly the iron shifts color on cutch. I accidentally dripped it on a t-shirt that I had not wanted to color shift. This was my first time ever dye project and I feel like I learned a lot. The eBook is very helpful and everything was packaged beautifully. Honestly I cannot wait to order more dyes and do it again!
